How to Pass the NMC CBT on Your First Try
August 31, 2026
Read the NMC Code Directly, Not a Summary
Before anything else, read the actual NMC Code — its four themes (Prioritise People, Practise Effectively, Preserve Safety, Promote Professionalism and Trust) and the specific standards under each. Exam questions frequently test the Code's precise language and framework, not just general professional ethics, so working from the primary source beats relying on secondhand summaries.
Learn UK-Specific Legislation That Shapes Practice
The Mental Capacity Act 2005, safeguarding frameworks, and consent principles specific to UK law (including Gillick competence for children) are tested directly and don't necessarily match the legal framework you trained under in another country. Study these as UK-specific legal concepts, even if your home country has broadly similar principles — the exam expects UK-specific terminology and application.
Master NEWS2 and Other UK Clinical Tools by Name
NEWS2, the Waterlow score, the MUST tool, and the Sepsis Six care bundle are UK-standard tools that show up repeatedly in scenario-based questions. Even if you're highly experienced with equivalent tools from your home country, learn these specific UK tools — their exact parameters and escalation triggers — since the exam tests them by name and structure.
Practice Scenario-Based Questions, Not Just Definitions
Because Nursing Practice & Decision-Making makes up 40% of the exam and is heavily scenario-based, practice reading a clinical scenario and determining the correct UK-context response, rather than just reviewing facts in isolation. This mirrors the actual exam format far more closely than flashcard-style review.
Understand Delegation and Team Structure Within the NHS
Leadership and team-working questions often test UK-specific concepts like the accountability split in delegation, the role of healthcare assistants, and NHS-specific escalation structures. If your home country's care team structure differs from the NHS model, study this domain as new material rather than assuming direct equivalence.
One Last Practice Pass
Our NMC CBT exam page has free practice quizzes across all four domains, plus a full 125-question mock exam, to use as your final review before test day.
