An adaptive math placement assessment used by many colleges and universities to determine which math course a student should place into, ranging from developmental math up through calculus-readiness. ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) adjusts question difficulty in real time based on a student's responses to build an individualized picture of their math knowledge.

Who it's for

Incoming college students, and sometimes current students, who need to complete a math placement assessment before registering for their first math course. Because ALEKS is adaptive, it's also commonly used by students retaking the assessment after completing the associated "Prep and Learning Module" to try to place into a higher-level course.

What's covered

  • Pre-Algebra & Arithmetic — fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and order of operations
  • Algebra — linear equations, systems of equations, factoring, quadratics, and function evaluation
  • Geometry & Functions — area, perimeter, volume, the Pythagorean theorem, coordinate geometry, and identifying function types

What to expect

Because ALEKS is adaptive, the specific questions a student sees depend on their previous answers — there's no fixed question count or fixed difficulty progression the way there is on many standardized tests. The assessment estimates a student's mastery across dozens of specific math topics, and the resulting placement result determines course eligibility, often alongside an option to complete a personalized "Prep and Learning Module" and reassess before course registration.

How to prepare

Because placement directly affects which math course (and how many semesters of prerequisite coursework) a student needs to take, refreshing rusty skills before the initial assessment can meaningfully shorten a student's overall math course sequence. Since the assessment spans a wide range of topics from basic arithmetic through introductory algebra and geometry, a broad review — rather than focusing only on the most advanced topics — tends to produce the most accurate (and often higher) placement result.

Certification details

  • Administering body: ALEKS is developed by McGraw Hill and used by individual colleges and universities, which set their own placement cutoffs and course mapping.
  • Format: Adaptive, computer-based assessment; question difficulty adjusts based on prior answers rather than following a fixed test form.
  • Retake policy: Many institutions allow a student to complete a personalized ALEKS Prep and Learning Module and retake the assessment to try to improve their placement result.
  • Validity: Placement results are typically valid for a set period (often around 12-18 months, varying by institution) before a student may need to reassess.
