TT Fire Service Exam Prep: English, Numerical, General Reasoning

English & Verbal Skills

Focus on the mechanics that show up repeatedly on aptitude tests: subject-verb agreement, correct word choice (synonyms/antonyms), punctuation of quoted speech, and identifying complete versus fragmented sentences. Reading short passages quickly and answering "what does this actually say" questions — rather than "what do I already know about this topic" — is the specific skill worth drilling, since aptitude exams often include a plausible-sounding wrong answer that isn't actually supported by the text.

Numerical Reasoning

Practice arithmetic, percentages, ratios, and rate problems without a calculator until they feel automatic. Word problems involving speed, time, and volume (a hose filling a tank, two vehicles traveling in opposite directions) are common on aptitude-style numerical sections — the key skill is translating the words into the right calculation, not the calculation itself. Set a per-question time limit while practicing so you build a feel for pacing before test day.

General & Abstract Reasoning

These questions test pattern recognition and logical deduction rather than memorized knowledge. For number and shape sequences, look for the underlying rule (a constant difference, a doubling pattern, an alternating cycle) rather than guessing. For logic questions ("if all X are Y, and Z is X, what follows"), work through the statement mechanically rather than relying on intuition — abstract reasoning questions are often designed so the intuitive answer is wrong.

General Exam-Day Strategy

  • Don't get stuck on one question — mark it and move on, then return if time allows.
  • Read each question fully before looking at the answer choices; aptitude tests often include distractor answers that address a slightly different question than the one asked.
  • Practice consistently over two to three weeks rather than cramming the night before — speed and accuracy on this kind of test build with repetition, not last-minute review.
