Networking Concepts (23%): Build the Foundation First
- Master the OSI model layer by layer, including which device type and protocols operate at each layer — this framework underlies questions across every other domain.
- Practice subnetting daily until it's fast, not just correct. Work through CIDR notation, usable host calculations, and subnet mask conversions repeatedly rather than reviewing them once.
- Memorize well-known port numbers (80, 443, 22, 21, 25, 53, 110, 143, 3389, and others) as flashcard-style recall — this is pure memorization with a high question-frequency payoff.
- Understand cloud service and deployment models (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS, public/private/hybrid) conceptually, since these are tested as definitions rather than hands-on scenarios.
Networking Implementation (20%): Devices, Routing, and Wireless
- Know the difference between distance-vector and link-state routing protocols, and be able to name examples of each (RIP/EIGRP vs. OSPF).
- Understand VLAN trunking and 802.1Q tagging conceptually — a meaningful share of implementation and troubleshooting questions hinge on VLAN misconfiguration scenarios.
- Review Wi-Fi standards in order (802.11n/ac/ax) along with their frequency bands and key features like MIMO and OFDMA — these are tested both directly and through troubleshooting scenarios.
- Learn cable types and connectors by use case, not just by name — knowing when to use Cat 6a versus fiber, or LC versus SC connectors, is tested more than raw specifications.
Networking Operations (19%): Documentation and Availability
- Know your availability and recovery metrics — RTO, RPO, MTTR, and MTBF are frequently confused with each other, so practice distinguishing them explicitly.
- Understand hot/warm/cold site distinctions and be able to match each to an appropriate disaster recovery scenario.
- Review monitoring protocols (SNMP, syslog, NetFlow) and what each is actually used to collect, since these are often tested by matching a tool to a monitoring need.
Network Security (14%): Small Domain, High Cross-Over Value
- Learn the CIA triad and defense-in-depth as foundational frameworks, since security questions elsewhere on the exam often reference these principles implicitly.
- Understand common attack types (ARP spoofing, evil twin, on-path/man-in-the-middle, DDoS) well enough to recognize them from a described scenario, not just from a definition.
- Review VPN types and IPsec modes — site-to-site vs. remote access, tunnel vs. transport mode — since these appear in both Security and Implementation contexts.
Network Troubleshooting (24%): The Largest Domain Deserves the Most Practice
- Memorize CompTIA's seven-step troubleshooting methodology in order, and practice applying it to sample scenarios rather than just reciting the list.
- Practice command-line tools hands-on — ping, traceroute/tracert, ipconfig/ifconfig, nslookup, and netstat — so you recognize their output and know when to reach for each one.
- Study common physical-layer fault types (open/short circuits, split pairs, attenuation, crosstalk) alongside the tools used to diagnose them (TDR, OTDR, cable certifier).
- Review wireless-specific troubleshooting causes (channel overlap, RF interference, client saturation) separately from wired troubleshooting, since the exam tests both.
