- Lock down the Article 100 definitions cold, especially the distinction between a service, a feeder, and a branch circuit — nearly every later section assumes you already know these boundaries.
- Memorize the standard working space clearance dimensions (depth, width, and headroom) and the factors that increase them, since this is a frequently and directly tested numeric detail.
- Learn the "qualified person" and "readily accessible" definitions precisely — they quietly govern a large share of later requirements without being restated every time.
Wiring and Protection — Circuits, Overcurrent, and Grounding (24%)
- Drill the 125% continuous-load multiplier until it's automatic — it governs branch-circuit, feeder, and equipment conductor sizing throughout the exam.
- Practice the full branch-circuit-to-service load calculation sequence end to end, including the applicable demand factor tables, rather than studying each step in isolation.
- Separate GFCI-required locations from AFCI-required locations explicitly — the two lists overlap but aren't identical, and the exam tests the distinction.
- Learn the tap rule provisions (10-ft, 25-ft, and outside taps) as named exceptions to the general "protect at the point of supply" rule, since they're commonly tested as a set.
Wiring Methods and Materials — Cable and Raceway (21%)
- Build a comparison table of recognized use, prohibited use, and support interval for each cable and raceway type (NM, AC, MC, UF, SE, RMC, IMC, EMT, PVC) rather than studying each one in isolation.
- Practice a full conduit fill calculation by hand using Table 1, 4, and 5, then learn the Informative Annex C shortcut as a faster alternative once you understand the underlying method.
- Memorize the standard box fill volume allowances (per conductor, per clamp, per device) and practice a complete box fill calculation with a mixed configuration.
Equipment for General Use — Receptacles, Appliances, and Motors (20%)
- Separate a motor's overload protection sizing from its short-circuit protection sizing explicitly — they use different base values and different percentages, and this is one of the most consistently tested distinctions in the trade.
- Learn the multiple-motor feeder calculation (sum of full-load currents, plus 25% of the largest) as its own dedicated skill.
- Review the appliance-specific branch circuit and disconnecting means provisions (a dishwasher, a water heater, a range) as a group, since they share several common patterns.
Special Occupancies and Equipment — Hazardous Locations Through EV Charging (15%)
- Organize hazardous location content by Class and Division/Zone, then by wiring method and sealing requirement for each combination, rather than trying to memorize every provision as a flat list.
- Study a health care facility's redundant grounding requirement and essential electrical system branches together, since they reflect the same underlying patient-safety rationale.
- Learn the swimming pool GFCI and equipotential bonding requirements as a set, since they address two distinct hazard mechanisms (fault current versus voltage gradient) that frequently appear together in a single question.
NEC Tables and Annexes — Calculations Reference (10%)
- Practice a voltage drop calculation using Table 8's circular mil area and the standard formula until the math feels routine rather than something you have to rederive.
- Learn to distinguish Table 1/4/5 (raceway fill), Table 2 (bending radius), Table 8 (conductor properties), and Table 9 (AC resistance/reactance) by their distinct purposes, since mixing them up under time pressure is a common, avoidable mistake.
General Strategy: Practice With Realistic Word Problems
Because NEC exam questions are frequently scenario-based calculations rather than pure definition recall, practice reading a full word problem — a specific circuit, load, or installation scenario — and working through the applicable calculation from start to finish. This mirrors the actual exam format far better than reviewing table values in isolation.
