How to Pass ACON on Your First Try
August 31, 2026
Confirm Current Exam Details Directly With ONCC First
Because ACON is a newly developed credential still moving through beta testing as of this writing, your very first step should be confirming current exam format, timing, and eligibility directly with ONCC rather than relying on any single secondary source, including this one. Details may still be evolving as the credential launches fully.
Practice Advanced-Level Clinical Decision-Making, Not Just Recall
The biggest shift from OCN-level knowledge to ACON-level expectations is depth of clinical judgment — you're not just expected to know what a treatment complication is, but to reason through advanced diagnostic workup, treatment planning trade-offs, and management decisions the way an APRN would in practice. Practice working through case-style scenarios rather than reviewing isolated facts.
Master Staging and Diagnostic Interpretation
Advanced Assessment & Diagnosis content rewards genuine fluency with staging systems (TNM), diagnostic modalities (imaging, biomarkers, liquid biopsy), and how findings translate into clinical decisions. This is content where advanced practice depth really shows — review it as applied clinical reasoning, not just terminology.
Build Confidence With Newer Treatment Modalities
Immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and CAR T-cell therapy are increasingly central to modern oncology care, and their associated toxicities (immune-related adverse events, cytokine release syndrome) are distinct from classic chemotherapy side effects. If your clinical background is stronger in traditional chemotherapy management, make sure you're equally comfortable with these newer modalities.
Don't Underweight Palliative and Survivorship Care
Advanced oncology practice increasingly emphasizes survivorship planning and palliative care integration alongside curative treatment, not just at end of life. Review the distinction between palliative and hospice care clearly, and understand survivorship care planning as a distinct clinical responsibility.
One Last Practice Pass
Our ACON exam page has free practice quizzes across all four domains, plus a full mock exam, to use as one part of your broader prep — alongside confirming current details with ONCC.
