CPPM Exam Study Tips: Domain-by-Domain Prep Strategies
September 14, 2026
Human Resources & Business Operations Management (30%)
- Learn the FLSA exempt/non-exempt distinction cold, including what makes an employee exempt (salary and duties tests), since this affects overtime obligations and is frequently tested.
- Know FMLA eligibility requirements precisely — the 12-month, 1,250-hour, and 50-employees-within-75-miles thresholds are specific numbers the exam expects you to recall exactly.
- Understand ADA reasonable accommodation obligations, including the concept of undue hardship as the employer's limiting factor.
- Review facilities, technology, and vendor management concepts even if they feel less "HR-like" — this domain covers the full operational scope, not just personnel topics.
Financial Management & Reimbursement (30%)
- Walk through the full revenue cycle in sequence — scheduling/eligibility verification, charge capture, claims submission, denial management, A/R follow-up — until you can explain each stage without hesitation.
- Distinguish reimbursement models clearly: fee-for-service pays per service, capitation pays a fixed amount per patient per period, and bundled payments cover an entire episode of care.
- Know the difference between a contractual adjustment, a write-off, and bad debt — these are commonly confused terms with distinct meanings in practice finance.
- Review RVUs and the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule conceptually, since these underpin how physician reimbursement is actually calculated.
Health Information Management & Compliance/Risk (25%)
- Learn HIPAA's core rules by name and function — Privacy Rule, Security Rule, Breach Notification Rule — and what each one actually governs.
- Know the minimum necessary standard and patient right of access specifically, including the 30-day timeframe for fulfilling a patient's record request.
- Review the three safeguard categories under the Security Rule (administrative, physical, technical) and be able to classify examples of each correctly.
- Understand how Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute concerns intersect with practice management decisions, such as physician compensation and vendor relationships.
Patient Care Systems & Quality (15%)
- Learn the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle as the standard quality improvement framework referenced throughout this domain.
- Understand key patient-flow and access metrics — no-show rates, wait times, and access-to-care measures — and how they're used to identify operational problems.
- Review patient experience and satisfaction measurement tools conceptually, since this domain tests awareness of these tools more than deep technical detail.
General Strategy: Prioritize Your Weakest Domain
Given the broad, generalist nature of this exam, the biggest study-time payoff usually comes from shoring up whichever domain is furthest from your day-to-day professional background, rather than over-polishing the domain you already know well.
