Bruce, YMCA step test, Astrand-Rhyming, Rockport walk test, Cooper 12-minute run, Queens College step test — rather than studying each protocol as an isolated fact, build a single table comparing their target populations, general procedures, and how each result translates into an estimated fitness level. Comparative study like this makes it much easier to keep the protocols straight under exam conditions.
Use Scenario Practice for Program Design and Implementation
Program Design and Implementation together make up nearly two-thirds of the exam, and both lean on applied judgment: given this client's goals, limitations, and risk profile, what's the appropriate FITT-VP prescription or in-session adjustment? Practice reasoning through realistic scenarios rather than only reviewing definitions — this is a more transferable skill and mirrors how the exam actually asks questions.
Study Special Population Programming as a Cross-Cutting Category
Special population content (pregnancy, older adults, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, orthopedic limitations, and more) appears throughout the exam rather than confined to one section. For each major population, build a short mental checklist: primary safety consideration, key contraindications, and typical programming adjustment. At 10% of the exam, this domain is easy to under-study, but it tests precise distinctions — informed consent limitations, confidentiality exceptions, negligence elements, and emergency response procedures — that reward specific review rather than general common sense.

Given the calculation-heavy content, build up to at least one or two full-length timed practice runs before test day.
