Build Your Study Plan Around Time Pressure, Not Just Content
Before diving into specific tips, it's worth internalizing the OAR's real constraint: it isn't that the material is unusually hard, it's that the time limits are tight relative to the number of questions — especially on Mechanical Comprehension, where you get just 30 seconds per question. Effective prep spends as much time building speed and recognition as it does building raw knowledge.
Math Skills Test: 30 Questions, 40 Minutes, No Calculator
- Rebuild mental math fluency first. Before touching algebra review, spend a few sessions just practicing arithmetic — multiplication, long division, percentages — by hand. This is the single most common time sink for candidates who otherwise know the material.
- Don't skip fractions and exponents. They show up more often than candidates expect and are fast to answer correctly once the mechanics are automatic, but slow and error-prone if you're re-deriving the rules each time.
- Practice word problems specifically. Word problems (rate, work, mixture, average) test the same underlying math as straightforward equations, but add a translation step — turning a paragraph into an equation — that's worth practicing separately.
Reading Comprehension Test: 20 Questions, 30 Minutes
- Read the question stem before the passage when possible. Knowing what you're being asked to find helps you read with purpose instead of trying to absorb and remember everything.
- Distinguish "stated" from "implied but not stated." A large share of OAR reading questions hinge on this exact distinction — a passage will describe a trend and a future need, and a wrong answer will claim that need has already been resolved, or state something the passage never actually said.
- Practice "which statement does NOT follow" questions deliberately. This question format appears frequently and rewards a specific skill: checking each answer choice against the passage individually rather than picking the one that "feels off."
Mechanical Comprehension Test: 30 Questions, 15 Minutes
- Memorize the core formulas, don't just understand them conceptually. Mechanical advantage for levers (F1 × d1 = F2 × d2), pulleys (MA = number of supporting rope segments), and inclined planes (MA = length ÷ height); Ohm's law (V = IR) and how resistors combine in series versus parallel; Hooke's law (F = kx); and basic density and buoyancy relationships. At 30 seconds a question, recognizing which formula applies has to be near-instant.
- Review gear behavior specifically. Questions about rotational speed, gear ratios, and direction of rotation in a gear train are common and rely on a small set of rules (meshed gears rotate in opposite directions; speed × teeth is constant across meshed gears) that are easy to memorize but easy to blank on under time pressure if you haven't drilled them.
- Don't neglect the conceptual, non-numeric questions. Not every Mechanical Comprehension question involves a calculation — some ask you to identify which simple machine a tool represents, or which class of lever a mechanism is. These are pure recall and among the fastest points available if you've reviewed them.
General Test-Day Strategy
- Don't get stuck on one question. With a fixed time limit per section, spending 90 seconds stuck on a single Mechanical Comprehension question means shortchanging two others. If you're unsure, make your best guess and move on — there's no penalty for guessing.
- Do a full-length timed run before test day. Practicing sections individually builds skill, but a single full-length simulation is what reveals whether your pacing actually holds up across all three sections back to back.
