The content that deserves the disproportionate share of your remaining study time is the material that's genuinely new to most candidates: flight and altitude physiology. Concepts like Boyle's Law and Dalton's Law, gas expansion in body cavities during ascent, barometric pressure changes and their effect on medical equipment, and the specific hypoxia risks of unpressurized or partially pressurized cabins don't show up on standard bedside nursing exams, and they're not concepts most nurses absorb through clinical experience alone unless they've already been flying for a while.
A practical way to build your calendar is to sort content into two buckets before you schedule anything. The first bucket is reinforcement — trauma, cardiovascular, and general critical care content you likely know reasonably well from prior certification and daily practice, where your study time should focus on transport-specific twists rather than re-learning fundamentals from zero. The second bucket is genuinely new material — flight physiology, altitude-related complications, and the professional practice and safety content specific to transport operations — where you should budget the majority of your study hours and expect to need more repetition before it feels intuitive. Neonatal and pediatric transport deserves its own dedicated block regardless of your background, since even nurses with strong adult critical care experience often have less day-to-day exposure to transporting a compromised neonate or pediatric patient, and the physiology and equipment considerations differ meaningfully from adult transport.
Within each study block, work through scenario-based practice questions rather than flashcard-style recall, since that's the format the actual exam uses. A question isn't just going to ask you to define hypoxia — it's going to describe a patient during a specific phase of flight, at a specific altitude change, with specific symptoms, and ask what's happening physiologically and what you should do about it. Practicing that pattern-matching skill, translating a scenario into an underlying physiological principle, is a different skill than memorizing definitions, and it's worth deliberately building well before your exam date rather than discovering the gap on test day.
Mistakes Worth Avoiding
The most common mistake experienced flight nurses make is over-relying on hands-on experience and under-preparing for the parts of the content outline that don't come up often even in active flight practice. You might fly dozens of trauma transports a year without ever encountering a severe altitude-related gas expansion emergency, which means your real-world pattern recognition for that specific content area may be thinner than your overall experience level would suggest. Don't assume years in the cockpit substitute for deliberate review of the physiology content — treat your flight experience as a strong foundation for the clinical judgment questions, but pair it with focused study on the material that simply doesn't come up as often in day-to-day flights.
A second mistake is underestimating the exam's length and treating the unscored pretest questions as an excuse to coast. For many newly certified flight nurses, the practical shift isn't dramatic day-to-day, since you were likely already performing transport-level work before you sat for the exam.
